Online Counseling FAQ & Tips
Is online counseling the right fit for me?
I provide individual counseling online to adults in Bergen County and throughout New Jersey
Online therapy means having therapy from the comfort of your own space using a computer, tablet or phone with an internet connection. You don’t have to worry about finding extra time to commute to and from the office, dealing with traffic, finding a parking spot, waiting in a waiting room with other people, or being exposed to viruses. Many of my patients find it easier to fit therapy into their busy schedules, sometimes even having a session in their car during their lunch break or in between meetings while working from home or at night when the kids are in bed. Some enjoy being able to snuggle up with their dog or cat for extra comfort during sessions.
Frequently Asked Questions about virtual therapy sessions.
Studies show that online therapy is just as effective as in person. Some patients find it more effective because they feel more comfortable in their own space and the convenience allows them to keep appointments consistently.
Privacy & confidentiality is extremely important and that is why I only use HIPAA compliant technology for video, email, phone, and texting. I will send you an invitation to your patient portal where you can send and receive documents and messages.
Sessions will take place on a HIPAA compliant and secure online teletherapy platform. I will email you a private link for our sessions.
Sometimes technical difficulties occur. You do not need to be very tech-savy. I will help you trouble-shoot any issues and we’ll always have a backup plan if the tech issues are unable to be solved quickly.
All you’ll need is a computer, tablet or smart phone with a camera and an internet connection. If you’re able to stream services like Netflix or HBO Max then you’ll be able to do online counseling.
I will email you a link that will take you right to our private session.
Tips for Online Counseling
It is very important to me that you feel comfortable during our sessions. Here are some suggestions to help make sure you receive the best care.
Find a quiet & comfortable space
Create a comfortable, private spot that is quiet where you can sit comfortably with your device at eye level. If you have a headset that will also help with reducing noise and distraction, and give you more privacy. If you live with others, you can put a do not disturb note on the door.
Limit distractions
Please close other applications and browser windows on your device, or put your phone on silent so you're not distracted or disturbed.
A good internet connection
If you're able to stream services like Netflix or HBOmax without problems, then your internet is fast enough for online therapy. It can help to close programs running in the background on your device so it runs faster. I will help you trouble-shoot any tech issues if they occur.
